For the past few months, a running joke on my live shows has been I can only consider marriage proposals on 10,000 token tip notes. This is obviously a joke, because its more tokens than can be purchased in one day, but it cashes out to less than the filing fees to get married and divorced (let alone a wedding dress) in many states.
This joke started when, as a ploy for attention, many viewers would say marry me. And people who frequently watch say they have been hoping for someone to tip for it and then get shot down. Maybe this is happening because I have hard time saying I would seriously consider such a proposal without laughing.
Losing out on our little joke isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things. The problem with poorly thought out legislation, in addition to being opposed by DOJ and victims, is the stifling effect this has on speech and technology. Because social media is now liable for assuring that such content is not posted on its sites, we will see an arms race of rules, blocking algorithms and circumventing tactics. I expect this is going to be bad for everyone, even people who have nothing to do with the adult industry. To those of you who think this is partisan problem, please note both parties supported this thing.
To act on the belief that we possess the knowledge and the power which enable us to shape the processes of society entirely to our liking, knowledge which in fact we do not possess, is likely to make us do much harm.
